Since I doubt most of you will make the effort to listen to the Youtube discussion below in full (because it’s easier just to get your comforting misinformation from MSNBC), I have extracted and edited a fascinating tidbit from the transcript, in the hope of piquing your interest in the full discussion. In this tidbit, Professor Jeffrey Sachs recounts an example of our eternal fondness for regime change, in this case during the John F Kennedy administration:

“In Guyana at the moment of Independence in the early 1960s the  … very smart young leader for Independence [Cheddi] Jagan came to see President Kennedy. In this case … his hardline advisor Arthur Schlesinger Jr was in the room and at the end of a fine conversation Jagan mentioned an article in the Monthly Review, in other words a left-wing Marxist thing. And when he left the room Schlesinger said I think we have to get rid of him and within a few weeks they had overthrown this guy by stoking a phony general strike in Guyana. Now the guy ended up coming back to power several times in the next 30 years. And the beauty of this story is that in 1991 I think it is … 30 years later … Jagan was prime minister of his country and came to the Council on Foreign Relations on 58 East 68th Street and there was Schlesinger in the audience. And Schlesinger raised his hand at the end of the talk and said ‘Prime Minister, I owe you an apology that I want to give here. I was the one that had you overthrown 30 years ago because of what you said in the Oval Office.’ And this was this was one of the amazing experiences. True story. But how many times have we done that? And if the United States would just do one thing: stop overthrowing other governments we would be on the fastest road to peace in this world imaginable. This is the whole Ukraine story. If Yanakovich had not been violently overthrown in February 2014 all of the rest of the events would not have gone the way they were going. Yanukovych wanted neutrality. He had a long-term lease agreement with Russia about Savastopol, and the naval fleet. This this was peace. But the United States could not stand the idea of neutrality for Ukraine. That’s Bolton. That is Nuland.”

Here Professor Sachs is talking about warhawks John Bolton and Victoria Nuland, who continue to be rewarded in the Biden administration (as Sachs explains, apparently even as they contnue to fail in their regime change efforts). The disastrous Nuland was promoted U.S. Acting Deputy Secretary of State as recently as July 29th.
