Your Tax Dollars At Work

Your Tax Dollars At Work

August 22, 2024 (Posted by) Don Pelton

How much money did each of us Americans personally contribute to murdering people in Gaza this year? Jon Schwarz of the Intercept came up with a crude estimate of $150. He rightfully says that what is so horrifying about this figure is that it is relatively small, small enough that most of us can afford to simply ignore it or forget about it.

So, what can we do to not forget about our personal contribution to genocide? A constant stream of gruesome articles and graphic photos and videos eventually numb the moral sense, don’t they? They shouldn’t, but they do seem to work that way.

Here’s another tactic for shining a light on our genocidal project in Gaza, an infographic about the weight of the rubble covering that 24-mile-long patch of land (hint: about 42 million tons):

Gaza is covered in 42 million tonnes of rubble.

The enduring human, environmental, and economic consequences of the immense toxic detritus of genocide—towering piles of debris that also bury an estimated 10,000 dead—are just staggering https://t.co/VW0v9nCSiQ pic.twitter.com/locMxt7Vbd

GAZA RUBBLE

I’m still struggling with what to do about all this information horror.

One idea I’ve had: Perhaps I’ll vote this year as if I were a Palestinian American whose wife and children and parents lay dead under the rubble in Gaza.
