Is Haiti News Coverage “Disaster Porn”?
First, before reading on, give.
Give to the American Red Cross or to any of dozens of other relief agencies.
Then, consider these questions:
What did Washington meddling in past decades — both Democratic and Republican — have to do with the erosion of the Haitian infrastructure that left it more poorly prepared to deal with today’s devastating earthquake?
What was President Bill Clinton’s role in the destruction of Haiti’s rice industry, with the consequent mass migration of the rural poor into ill-fated Port -au-Prince?
In the following short video from his program yesterday, Thom Hartmann interviews investigative journalist Max Blumenthal, who reported on these matters in 2004 in his piece, “The Other Regime Change.”
Near the end of this interview, Hartmann asks Blumenthal why we aren’t getting this level of analysis from the mainstream media coverage of the disaster.
Blumenthal answers that most news coverage is “disaster porn.”
